Purpose: Each band member will submit materials which will serve as an end-of-year assessment as well as be used to determine ensemble placements for the upcoming 2023-24 school year. A link to materials, as well as physical copies, will be available on Focus, via email, the school website.

What to submit? Students should submit a single recording of the items below OR sign up for a live appointment to play the following:

Percussion - placement auditions will be after-school on Friday May 12th from 3:30-5 PM. If unable to attend, please contact Ms. Picinich for an alternate audition date/time by the end of the school day on Monday May 1st. No extensions will be provided except for extenuating circumstances.

  • Must play ALL scales (requirements listed above by class level) 2 octaves w/ 2 mallets
  • Must play BOTH the snare & mallet excerpts provided (P.1-5 vs. P.7 have diff. materials)
  • Must play the following snare drum rudiments: single stroke 16th notes (p.22, 24), multiple bounce roll (p.28 & 41) & flam (p.18) AT 60, 90, & 120 BPM. Work on dynamics on p. 29 by using different stick heights (lower = softer, higher = louder).
  • Where to submit? Students should submit video recordings by midnight on Wednesday 5/24. NO extensions will be provided.

 

CONCERT BAND AUDITION JUDGING RUBRIC

 
 TONE (sound quality)   Tone quality consistently lacks depth & sound is not well-supported due to weak air and/or embouchure.  Tone quality sometimes lacks depth & sound is occasionally supported by strong air and/or embouchure.  Tone quality has depth & sound is consistently supported by strong air and embouchure.
 RHYTHM (are rhythms played correctly)  The majority of rhythms are not read correctly (0-25%).  A significant portion of rhythms are not read correctly (25-80%).  The majority of rhythms are read correctly (81-100%).
 ARTICULATION (are all articulations observed?)  The majority of articulations are unclear or not observed. Tongue placement is inconsistent & air support is lacking.  A significant portion of articulations are unclear or not observed. Tongue placement is sometimes consistent but air support is inconsistent.  The majority of articulations are clear and observed. Tongue placement & air support are consistent.
 TEMPO (is a good tempo chosen? Do you maintain your tempo?)  Tempo is not established and wavers throughout performance.  Tempo is established for most of the performance with multiple tempo changes.  Tempo is well-established & maintained throughout the performance.
 CORRECT NOTES? (are all the pitches played correctly?)  Key signature not observed. The majority of pitches are not sounded correctly due to lack of air support and/or wrong slide position/fingering/key. (0-25%).  Key signature mostly observed. A significant portion of pitches are not played correctly due to lack of air support and/or wrong slide position/fingering/key. (25-85%)  Key signature observed with 1 or 2 errors. The majority of pitches are sounded correctly (86-100%).
